“I was a poet animated by philosophy, not a philosopher with poetic faculties.” (“Eu era um poeta animado pela filosofia, não um filósofo com faculdades poéticas.”). Assim escreveu, originalmente em inglês e ainda jovem, Fernando Pessoa. Nesta sessão, Jonardon Ganeri, Universidade de Toronto, e Bartholomew Ryan discutem o encontro entre a filosofia e a poesia nos escritos de Pessoa, tendo por base os livros que ambos publicaram recentemente: Critical Lives: Fernando Pessoa (Ryan) e Fernando Pessoa: Imagination and the Self (Ganeri).

 

“I was a poet animated by philosophy, not a philosopher with poetic faculties.” This is what Fernando Pessoa wrote, originally in English and at a young age. In this session, Jonardon Ganeri, University of Toronto, and Bartholomew Ryan will discuss the encounter between philosophy and poetry in Pessoa's writings, based on the books they both recently published: Critical Lives: Fernando Pessoa (Ryan) and Fernando Pessoa: Imagination and the Self (Ganeri).

 

Biografias

 

Jonardon Ganeri is the Bimal. K. Matilal Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. He is the author of Fernando Pessoa: Imagination and the Self (OUP 2024), bringing the ideas of the Portuguese poet into dialogue with Indian philosophical poetics; and Virtual Subjects, Fugitive Selves (OUP 2020), an analysis of Fernando Pessoa’s philosophy of self. Other books include The Self: Naturalism, Consciousness and the First-Person Stance (OUP 2010); Attention, Not Self (OUP 2017);  The Concealed Art of the Soul (OUP 2012); and Inwardness: An Outsiders’ Guide (Columbia 2021). He delivered the 2024 John Locke Lectures at the University of Oxford, entitled Seeing in Sanskrit (forthcoming).

 

Bartholomew Ryan é filosofo, músico e escritor. É autor de Critical Lives: Fernando Pessoa (Reaktion Books, 2024) e Kierkegaard´s Indirect Politics: Interludes withLukács, Schmitt, Benjamin and Adorno (Brill, 2014). Em breve, vai publicar um livro chamado James Joyce: The Unfolding Art of Flourishing and Decay (OUP, 2025). É co-editor dos livros: Fernando Pessoa and Philosophy: Countless Lives Inhabit Us (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021) e Nietzsche e Pessoa: Ensaios (tinta da china, 2016). Ensinou em várias universidades do Brasil à Índia, e em Lisboa, Berlim, Oxford, Aarhus, Bishkek, Zagreb e na Croácia. É compositor e músico da banda internacional The Loafing Heroes.
