Maria de Lourdes Guimarães (1933-2021)
Born in Lisbon in 1933, she died in Porto, in 2021. She graduated in Germanic Philology from the University of Lisbon. Her literary activity developed around the translation of English language literary classics, such as the complete edition of Leaves of Grass, by Walt Whitman, distinguished with the Pen Club Translation Prize. She also translated poets such as D. H. Lawrence and W. B. Yeats, among others. In 2023, her book Idades Longas was published by Edições Afrontamento: it is a collection of twenty of her Portuguese unpublished poems, followed by ten English-language poems translated by her, from Donne to Derek Walcott.
